History of the Pavilion Theatre, Rhyl

There have been 3 Pavilion Theatres in Rhyl. The first was the Grand Pavilion Theatre. This was built in 1891 and burnt down in 1901. It was sited where the Sea Aquarium now stands. In 1908, a new Pavilion Theatre was built approximately where the present day Sky Tower is situated. This was demolished in 1974.

The present Pavilion Theatre was built in 1991 at a cost of £3.2 million. It's first show was on Wednesday September 25th 1991 appropriately called "First Night On The Prom". The previous Saturday an Open Day had been held to allow people to explore the theatre. Over 3,000 attended. The theatre was official opened by The Duke of Gloucester on 26th November 1991.

By coincidence in that same September, another of Rhyl's theatres was demolished. This was the Gaiety Theatre which had been built around the turn of the century. This 600 seat theatre was being replaced by the Sea Life Centre.
